Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia)

**Mountain Laurel**, also known as **spoonwood** or **calico bush**, and officially named **Kalmia latifolia**, is a broadleaved evergreen shrub native to the eastern United States that thrives in USDA Hardiness Zones 4a to 9a.

The clustered white, pink, and purple blossoms bloom in late spring to early summer and the plant itself can grow 6 to 10 feet tall at a rate of 1 to 2 feet per year. Not a fan of clay soil, it is recommended to plant these in raised garden beds or planters to provide the drainage it needs.

**Fun Fact:**
In 1907, the mountain laurel became the official state flower of Connecticut. In 1933, it became the official state flower of Pennsylvania.
