Famed for its fiery leaves that light up any landscape – the Rhododendron Calendulaceum, a/k/a the Flame Azalea, is one of the most famous native Appalachian plants in the world.
Growing in plant hardiness zones 5a through 8a, this decorative deciduous shrub grows to an average height of 5 to 7 feet and spans 8 to 10 feet wide at maturity. The non-fragrant flowers bloom in May to July and exhibit a stunning range of reddish orange to yellow colors. The nectar from these wildflowers attract pollinators such as butterflies and hummingbirds. The plant itself is considered highly toxic to humans and pets, so don’t try to eat it!
Fun fact about the Flame Azalea: Its name is derived not only from the flame-colored petals, but also from the expanded, closed buds which resemble the shape fire makes when a candle wick burns. It may also be referred to as wild honeysuckle, butterfly azalea or yellow azalea depending on region.
Are you a fan of the Flame Azalea? Prices range from about $20 for a 2.5 Qt. to $60 for a 3 gallon pot. Of course, you could always propagate your own if you have free access to the plant and plenty of patience.
